Lyme disease is an inflammatory disease involving multiple body systems. It's caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi which may be transmitted to humans via the bite of an infected tick. There are three main stages to the disease:
Stage I: Early disease
Symptoms include an erythema migrans rash, flu-like symptoms, joint/muscle pain, swollen lymph glands, and fatigue.
Stage II: Early disseminated disease
Untreated Lyme may spread, causing inflammation (joint pain/swelling), neurological issues (tingling, memory problems), and cardiac problems (myocarditis, heart rhythm issues).
Stage III: Late disseminated disease
Later stages may feature large-joint oligoarthritis, encephalopathy, peripheral polyneuropathy, and even seizures.
Overlapping symptoms between stages are possible.
*T-cell - A type of white blood cell critical for immune response, recognising and destroying infected or abnormal cells in the body.
*ELISA - Detects antibodies or antigens in a sample, indicating presence of specific substances.
