Maintrac newsletter: Growth factor receptors
The effect of growth factors is mediated via binding to receptors on the surface of target cells. The receptor proteins extend through the cell membrane (transmembrane receptors). When a specific ligand binds to the extracellular domain, the receptor is activated; consequently, various signal transduction pathways are influenced, which have a direct effect either on cell metabolism or control of gene transcription. The goal of specific drugs that target these growth factor receptors is reduced growth or death of the cancer cells. However, the use of some of these drugs is possible only once the target structures on the cancer cells have been detected.Read more.
